No one offered a weather forecast for the LegalTech® New York 2016 conference and trade on our annual list of legal industry predictions this year, but it probably wouldn’t count for much anyway. Mother Nature isn’t easily swayed regardless of what the forecasts say.
If the last two years are any indication, attendees will recall Midtown weathered ice, slush and snow in stride, flight delays notwithstanding. And so it is as we gear up for the yearly gathering of legal tech professionals, this year we’ve decided to come prepared.
In the LexisNexis® booth this year (booth #100), visitors will find the warmth of espresso and cappuccino machines, which will deliver visitors a complimentary shot of energy to go the distance. It is of course tied to a theme – there’s something big brewing in eDiscovery and what’s brewing may or may not have something to do with early case assessment.
Espresso Aside, Here are the Can’t Miss Events
As is our tradition, you’ll find live coverage of the event here on this blog. This includes product announcements, industry news, session recaps and bits and bytes from around the web, so be sure to check these pages the week of Feb. 2-4, 2016.

We’ll also curate a steady stream of content from the @business_of_law handle on Twitter and will be active on the hashtags for sessions and the show (#LTNY or #LTNY16).
Here’s what the lineup of events looks like from LexisNexis this year – and note some of these are CLE eligible:
1. Streamlined Marketing Content, Tech and Analytics for Optimized Client Journeys
Feb. 3, 2016 | 10:30-11: 45 a.m. | OAE1
Content is the hot topic among law firm marketers these days, including the need to reach every potential client through an array of social platforms. But it’s not enough to be a thought leader if you don’t have a well-defined strategy with a cross-sell and up-sell path, a personalized digital experience that reflects your clients’ business needs, the technology to manage your efforts, and clear-cut business development ROI. Most importantly, it needs to map the client journey across the lifetime of your relationship.
Speakers:
- Toni Minick, Director, Product Management, LexisNexis® InterAction®
- Michelle Woodyear, Client Advisor, LexisNexis InterAction
2. Using Analytics & Visualizations to Gain Better Insight into Your Data
Feb. 3, 2016 | 1:30-2:30 | Super Session | CLE Eligible
Big Data plays a big role in litigation for many law firms and organizations. Having the ability to cull down your data earlier in the litigation cycle enables your firm or organization to work more efficiently and competitively. Technology is increasingly playing a key role in helping firms and organizations effectively identify and manage the data most important to your litigation. This session will discuss the emerging trends around analytics in eDiscovery, and how your firm or organization can implement best practices to ensure the highest quality results at a lower cost than traditional document reviews.
Speakers:
- Krista Fuller, Director, Product Management, LexisNexis Litigation Solutions
3. Convincing Attorneys to Embrace Business Development and CRM
Feb. 3, 2016 | 2:00-3:00 p.m. | OAE2
Clients are the life blood of any law practice, and attorneys learn from law school on to protect their contact information. Law firms struggle to get attorney adoption of any technology, but when it comes to sharing contacts in a CRM system, most attorneys say “Forget It.” Given how quickly the industry is evolving, however, they’re learning that they no longer have a choice if they wish to be profitable. The question is, how can you get them to not just use but also embrace the technology to maximum advantage?
Speaker:
- Deborah Dobson, Marketing Technology Manager, Fisher & Phillips LLP
4. The New Attorney Experience: The Litigation Landscape in 2016 & Beyond
Feb. 3, 2016 | 3:45-5:00 p.m. | OAE3
This will be a panel discussion moderated by LexisNexis Application Architect Michael Etgen that will briefly discuss the current state of affairs for litigation, but then quickly move into a discussion of what the litigation attorney experience will look like over the next 5 years. This session will include valuable market insight into what attorneys want in their litigation technology and tools, and the impact of the user experience on use and adoption of those tools.
Speakers:
- Ron Best, eDiscovery Counsel & Director of Legal IS, Munger, Tolls & Olson LLP
- David Cowen, President and Managing Director, The Cowen Group
- Scott Milner, Partner, Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP
5. Moneyball for Lawyers: Using Data to Build a Major-League Law Practice
Feb. 3, 2016 | 10:30-11:30 a.m. | Super Session | CLE Eligible
What does a hit movie with Hollywood stars have to do with how you run your practice? Plenty. Because just like Oakland A’s General Manager Billy Beane used data analysis to revolutionize the way baseball is played, you can take the same approach to learn how your firm operates—and enhance the legal service you provide your clients. This session won’t help you win any pennants, but you will come away with a better understanding of how your firm works, what you can do to make it work better, and where you can take it in the future.
Speaker:
- Christopher T. Anderson, VP & General Counsel, How To MANAGE a Small Law Firm; Founding Partner, AndersonDodson, P.C.
Bonus Event! Avoiding the TAR Pits: A Practitioners Roadmap to TAR and Predictive Coding
Feb. 3, 2016 | 10:15-11:15 a.m. | Emerging Technology
SVM, LSI, PLSA, NLP, SAL, CAL, Judgmental Sampling, blah, blah, blah. Even the most experienced, savvy eDiscovery professionals can too easily find themselves turned in circles trying to learn the expanding terminology related to Technology Assisted Review, and particularly Predictive Coding. This session is designed for attorneys and legal technology professionals who want to gain a real, practical understanding of the various TAR / PC related terms, and how the different algorithms, technologies and processes are used individually and in tandem to achieve the key objective of reducing noise and finding the signal in large data sets. (Note: Event sponsored by Brainspace Corporation).
Speakers:
- Eric P. Mandel, Indicium Law PLC
- Laura Kibbe, RVM Inc.
- David D. Lewis, Ph.D., David D. Lewis Consulting
- Nathalie W. Hofman, Ernst & Young
